Sardinia: A different rhythm
In the past, we have shared a newsletter or two with you that explored Sardinia through a packed, enigmatic itinerary, making a case for this glamorous, yet still quite untapped island floating on the Mediterranean Sea. We have gone over its remarkable diversity, from ancient archaeological sites and mountain villages to dramatic coastlines and centuries-old traditions.
This time, however, we wanted to share what it would feel like to follow a different, slower rhythm. Can one experience Sardinia more luxuriously? Can it be a space for rest, contemplation and relaxation?
Through this article we won't revisit every aspect of the itinerary in detail, but instead, share the moments, flavours and landscapes that best captured this gentler side of Sardinia.
Grab a coffee, take a deep breath and let’s slow down and enjoy conjuring up the senses activated in this five-minute read.
The Glamour of the North
The intimate group of advisors -led by Salvatore- began their journey in northern Sardinia, where every turn of the head seemed to reveal another breathtaking view of the sparkling turquoise sea.
The first days introduced a side of the island that balances sophistication with an extraordinary sense of place. One retreat, tucked into a secluded cove overlooking the protected waters of the Maddalena Archipelago, offered fragrant Mediterranean gardens, hidden beaches and spectacular sunset views. Another, set within a centuries-old coastal park, looked out across crystal-clear waters and embodied the understated elegance for which the Costa Smeralda has become famous.
During a three-hour exploration of Porto Cervo and San Pantaleo, two very different expressions of northern Sardinia were experienced. There were moments of unmistakable glamour in the former, where sleek yachts lined the marina and stylish cafes overlooked the harbour. Yet only a short drive away, San Pantaleo felt wonderfully different. Framed by dramatic granite peaks, its lively piazza and bohemian spirit have long attracted artists, creatives and travellers seeking a more ‘lived-in’ side of the Emerald Coast.
A particular highlight was an immersive visit to one of Gallura's most influential wineries. Nestled among those granite hills and Mediterranean scrub, the estate played a pioneering role in elevating Vermentino onto the international stage, demonstrating how Sardinia's signature white grape has the potential to achieve extraordinary depth, complexity and elegance. Touring the vineyards and tasting these celebrated wines alongside local cheeses, cured meats and crisp pane carasau offered a seductive introduction to the flavours of northern Sardinia.
Maddalena is Magic.
Exploring the Maddalena Archipelago is undoubtedly one of the highlights of a Sardinian journey. Maddalena doesn’t hold magic. It is magic.
As the group’s boat drifted between islands and hidden coves, the water became so clear that Salvatore mused over it as an illusion of the sea and sky blending in and melting into one another. Swimming in secluded bays, discovering stretches of untouched coastline and sharing an aperitivo on board underneath the Sardinian sun can create one of those rare afternoons that feels irreplaceable in one’s lifetime. Long after returning to shore, the colours and textures are what you remember: endless shades of rippling turquoise, pale granite sculpted by the wind, sprinklings of salt from the sea and onto one’s skin, and the smooth, deep blue horizons.
The Blue Zone ‘Way of Life’
Leaving the coast behind, the group travelled inland to Barbagia -one of the world's most celebrated Blue Zones- where an unusually high number of people live well into their nineties and beyond.
Rather than simply learning about this remarkable longevity, they were invited to experience it first-hand through an intimate cooking workshop set amongst the island's rugged interior landscapes in a beautiful, rustic space.
As dough was kneaded by hand, recipes passed down through generations were shared, and stories unfolded around the table, they gained a deeper appreciation for the traditions that continue to shape everyday life here. The cooking class became a window from which to peer into a culture where food remains inseparable from family, connection and respect for the land.
It offered a reminder that the secret of Sardinia's Blue Zone is not found in any single ingredient or recipe. Rather, it lies in a way of life built around community and shared moments around the table.
So a trip like this to Sardinia sensorially embeds within a person, what it means to live each minute of the day moving with intentional, almost meditative purpose in even the simplest of tasks.
Beyond the ‘Blue’ Postcard
Of course, Sardinia still has more stories to tell.
Even after leaving the coast behind, the group were revealed to more aspects of the island’s identity that have been shaped over thousands of years. In Orgosolo, colourful murals transformed village walls into an open-air gallery, offering insight into Sardinia's fiercely independent spirit and cultural identity. At the remarkable Well of Santa Cristina, one of the finest surviving legacies of the ancient Nuragic civilisation, silence and symmetry created one of the journey's most quietly moving moments.
Further south, the landscape became wilder and more untamed. Here, amongst rolling hills, Mediterranean vegetation and Europe's highest sand dunes, traces of Sardinia's industrial past can be encountered in the abandoned mining settlement of Ingurtosu.
An Island Best Experienced Slowly
But the point of this particular newsletter is to show you that Sardinia doesn’t have to be a ‘checklist’ of places just because it is relatively less explored. If you want to, you can visit the island and still let its mystery encapsulate you. You can decide on experiencing just a few instances, a handful of visuals, sparse slivers of feelings…
…which can be approached through:
The warmth of Sardinian hospitality.
The stillness of hidden coves.
Long conversations over shared meals.
Sunlight dancing across turquoise water.
The scent of wild herbs carried on the sea breeze.
And a well designed, personally refined Sardinia trip can bring all of this forth for you.
As always, so grateful for your love and support.
Until next time, Arrivederci!
